Tiger Drive Reference Page

Page Last Updated: 12/28/2017

Most engines equipped with a pull start have either a 6 mm shaft protruding from the rear of the engine, an 8 mm shaft protruding from the rear of the engine, or an internal 6 mm bearing. The internal bearing types have a removable 6 mm shaft, typically with a hex head.

The engine cross reference list below is constantly changing as manufacturers add new models and change old ones. To be certain which TigerDrive is correct, you can remove the existing pull starter and measure the shaft (if one protrudes) or check to see if there is a removable 6 mm shaft. We appreciate emails with updated information and/or new engine models to help us keep this list accurate.

TigerDrive Performance Note: TigerDrives are much more robust than the original pull starter or onboard starter. If you use a high torque starter (such as a Sullivan starter or DeWalt drill) be careful not to flood (hydraulically lock) the engine.

The TigerDrive can apply considerable torque to the engine, and you can damage the engine itself.

To relieve Hydraulic lock, loosen the glow plug and turn the engine over a few times. To further reduce the chance of damaging the engine or one way bearing due to Hydraulic Lock, Sullivan recommends the use of Drills with a clutch or other torque limiting device.

Don’t see your engine listed on the TigerDrive cross reference page? There still might be hope as you can do one of two things:

1) Please email several up close and in focus photos of the engine pull start area (with the pull starter removed).  This will let one of our engineers determine which item will work for your engine.

2) Remove and send your engine to us and we will give you one FREE (if we find one that fits) as part of our research and testing to see which TigerDrive will work with that specific engine.  There is about a 2 or 3 day turn around with this option.

You pay for the shipping to us and we will take care of the rest.  It’s not a bad deal for you plus it helps with updating our TigerDrive compatible products list on our website. Please send your engine to: Sullivan Products, Attn: TigerDrive Dept., 8950 Yellow Brick Rd , Baltimore, MD  21237

Important Note To HPI Savage Owners: Installation of the TigerDrive units into the HPI Savage chassis requires extensive modification of suspension components unless the Extended Chassis Kit has been installed!

Some documentation of these modifications has been published in major forums and personal websites. Due to the nature of these sites, we do not provide links to them. However, most can be found through a basic web search. It’s not to say that it won’t work but rather a real challenge and gamble to make it fit and work properly.

The HPI Savage is a very complex and compact setup of frame work and suspension, installation of the TigerDrive units into the Savage chassis and could require extensive custom modification of components which most likely void the warranty of the vehicle and any of its parts.

People have done it in the past and say it works perfectly but these people are not Sullivan employees and merely R/C hobby enthusiasts.  We can not put trust in an unknown person who could possibly damage our company’s reputation which it has built over the last 50 years.

You might be able to find more details and help on this subject in internet R/C forums or personal websites but from a legal standpoint, we choose not to get involved with the details of their modifications.

We do not want to be responsible for people tearing apart their expensive vehicles to find that the TigerDrive will not work or that permanent damage has been done to their vehicle.

You might also be able to find some valuable insight from the people at HPI Racing as they may have some recommendations that you can surely trust.

Installation Notes:

1). The start shaft of this engine is shorter than most and requires a slight modification of the TigerDrive unit to ensure maximum life from the one-way bearing.

To ensure that the one-way bearing engages the shaft as fully as possible it must be pressed further into the large bevel gear.

To do this place the TigerDrive Bracket on a hard flat surface with the gear resting in its normal position.

Be sure that the brass washer is in place and laying flat under the gear. With the gear resting on the bracket, drive the one-way bearing downwards until it contacts the surface that the bracket is resting on.

To do this use a soft faced hammer or small wood block to cushion the bearing edge from being deformed. Once the bearing is repositioned simply install the TigerDrive as normal.

2). Engines noted as “Require Shim – .XXX” will have interference problems if the TigerDrive is mounted as provided. The Shim is to be placed between the backplate of the engine and the mounting bracket of the TigerDrive preferably at the bolt locations.

Any material can be used to build to the thickness specified in the note. The dimension shown is in inches and should be the minimum thickness used.

A thicker shim or combination of shims can be used.

However care should be taken that the total thickness is not more than .020 greater than the recommended thickness.

The flat #4 washers provided in the hardware pack can be used in some cases as they are approximately .025 inches thick. Sullivan also offers a shim kit which will simplify this effort, Shim Kit p/n S698. These include 4 custom .020″ thick shims and are available anywhere TigerDrives are sold.

3). This engine has a recessed backplate that requires the S702 TigerDrive to be modified for proper gear mesh.

To correct the gear alignment place the bearing-gear assembly on a hard flat surface with the printed side of the bearing facing up.

Place a socket or tube whose inner diameter is larger than the bearing but Outer Diameter is smaller than the gear over the bearing so that it rests on the gear.

Next gently tap or press the gear down until it is flush with the bottom of the bearing.

If possible apply some retaining compound on the surface of the bearing where the gear will come to rest before re-positioning it.

A wicking grade compound can also be applied after the gear is moved. Once this is done install the gear-bearing assembly as normal making sure that the printed side of the bearing faces towards the engine.

4) The Dynamite .28 Mach 2 Big Red engine uses a 6 mm shaft version TigerDrive but the design of the internal parts of the motor require a special back mounting plate be used for the TigerDrive.

If you have this engine you can use either the S689 or S704 TigerDrive but you will also need to use our Special Plate- #RW-0811684. It is $2.00 and can only be ordered by calling or emailing us here at Sullivan Products.
